~~ SAT MAY 8TH ~~ CHASED, the 9-piece Denver band re-creating the charisma of the ’70s band CHASE will perform two shows @ Dazzle, 930 Lincoln St., Denver, CO 80203 ~~ Hit Timezz:  7 & 9PM  ~~ Cover: $15 ~~ The original CHASE band, which rivaled Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago in terms of jazz/rock power, came to an end in 1974 with the plane-crash death of founder Bill Chase. Chase had developed his prowess in jazz while playing lead trumpet with the Maynard Ferguson and Woody Herman bands. He later organized his own group featuring a front line of four trumpets with vocalist and rhythm section ~~ While most of the original CHASE songs and arrangements disappeared after Chase’s death, Denver trumpeters (and co-leaders) Scott Handler and Jay Nakagawa have faithfully transcribed these charts from the original studio and live recordings, maintaining as much of the original voicings as humanly and technologically possible ~~ CHASED’s performances are characterized by the four high-note trumpets that Jim Szantor of Downbeat magazine called “the hallmark of the Chase brass—complex cascading lines; a literal waterfall of trumpet timbre and technique.” ~~ CHASED is the trumpet section of Scott Handler, Jay Nakagawa, Kevin Tague and Jason Mabrey with the fantastic rhythm section of Tim Hurley (g), Mike Marlier (d), Dave Weinand (b) and Gary Dempsey (k). Vocalist Stuart Dameron’s stylings bring all of the excitement and energy of this era to life with his dynamic performances.  Come relive this period of music past at Dazzle with their great food, great atmosphere and always great music ~~  Reservations strongly suggested as all previous shows were sold out. The music combines the freedom and
individual expressiveness of modern mainstream combo playing with the intricacy, textural variety, and sheer power that is possible when writing for larger ensembles. For this performance, the octet will feature Brad Goode (trumpet), Josh Quinlan (alto), Peter Sommer (tenor), Tom Ball (trombone), Bill Kopper (guitar), Marc Sabatella (piano), Drew Morell (bass), and Mike Marlier (drums). Additionally, several of the pieces will feature vocalist Wendy Fopeano. The intent is for this to become a regular performing and recording ensemble ~~ Marc Sabatella is a jazz pianist, composer, and educator based in Denver, Colorado. His music has been characterized as “happily subverting the mainstream” (Colorado Daily), combining the “unpredictability of Thelonious Monk and lyricism of Bill Evans” (Denver Post) ~~ For two years, Marc could be heard leading the band every Friday night at Denver’s most famous jazz club, El Chapultepec, and he was the house pianist there for six years in all. He has also headlined at virtually all other Denver area jazz clubs over the years, including Dazzle, Vartan Jazz, Trios, and Sambuca. Marc has worked with the area’s top players, including Keith Oxman, Fred Hess, Ron Miles, Art Lande, and Hugh Ragin, as well as jazz greats such as Delfeayo Marsalis, Bobby Shew, John Fedchock, Allan Harris, Greg Abate, Red Holloway, Pete Christlieb, Marcus Printup, Wessell Anderson, Javon Jackson, Chico Freeman, Mel Martin, Sunny Wilkinson, and others. Marc has released several recordings as a leader in addition to appearing as a sideman on CDs by Hess and Ragin. The latest release by the Marc Sabatella Quartet is Determination ~~ Marc received an MM in Composition (Jazz Emphasis) from the University of Denver, where he currently teaches Jazz Theory and Aural Skills. In addition to his course at DU, Marc teaches privately and at Regis University. This work is perhaps the oldest and best known online jazz reference in the world. It has been translated into several other languages and is published in printed form as A Whole Approach To Jazz Improvisation. Marc has also published The Harmonic Language of Jazz Standards, and both books are distributed by jazz education legend Jamey Aebersold ~~ Contact: Marc Sabatella ~~ (303)232-1613 ~~ marc@outsideshore.com ~~ .

~~ SAT MAY 8TH ~~ HASED, the 9-piece Denver band re-creating the charisma of the ’70s band CHASE will perform two shows @ Dazzle, 930 Lincoln St., Denver, CO 80203 ~~ Hit Timezz:  7 & 9PM  ~~ Cover: $15 ~~ The original CHASE band, which rivaled Blood, Sweat & Tears and Chicago in terms of jazz/rock power, came to an end in 1974 with the plane-crash death of founder Bill Chase. Don’t miss the repeat performance of this outstanding group ~~ Music Educators:  Bring a group of 5+ students and receive YOUR ticket FREE.
