~~ MON APRIL 5TH ~ FRI APRIL 9TH ~~ CONFERENCE ON WORLD AFFAIRS RETURNS FOR SIXTY-SECOND RUN ~~ The Sixty-second Annual Conference on World Affairs will be held April 5-9, 2010 on the university of Colorado’s Boulder campus. A cherished Boulder tradition since 1948, Conference on World Affairs audiences have doubled in size over the last decade.  Last year, a combined audience of 92,000 students, faculty, local, national and international visitors attended 200 sessions at the five-day Conference ~~ One of the most popular CWA events is the Annual Jazz Concert. This year’s lineup of world-class performers will convene on the stage at Macky Auditorium on Tuesday, April 6 at 8 p.m. As with all CWA sessions, the CWA Jazz Concert is free and open to the public, however, beginning this year seating will no longer be offered on a general admission basis.  Advance online ticketing for assigned seats will be available with a service charge of $1.  Instructions for online ticketing will be announced in early March via the CWA Fans e-list.  To become a member of the CWA Fans e-list and receive notice of jazz concert tickets and other CWA events, go to the Conference website www.colorado.edu/cwa and click on the “Sign Up Now!” button ~~ The theme of this year’s Conference is an affirmation of the organization’s core value: “Free Thinking.”  CWA director Jim Palmer explains, “Free Thinking is meant to describe both the Conference’s cost free attendance and our unrestricted, free-ranging topics and ideas.  We are committed to keeping the Conference free in both senses.” ~~ Donations to the Conference on World Affairs may be made online at KeepCWAfree.com  Additionally, the CWA is offering corporate sponsorship packages; contact Maura Clare, Director of Public Affairs, at cwa@colorado.edu ~~ The Conference on World Affairs was founded in 1948, originally as a forum on international affairs, gaining fame early on with notable participants such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Arthur Miller and Henry Kissinger. Senior, student and group discounts available.  Free parking on-site ~~ Turtle Island Quartet ~~ A Love Supreme: The Legacy of John Coltrane ~~ The Turtle Island Quartet performs the music of John Coltrane ~~ Winner of the 2006 and the 2008 Grammy Award for Best Classical Crossover Album, Turtle Island Quartet offers a glorious fusion of jazz and chamber music.  John Coltrane’s jazz epiphany, “A Love Supreme,” was recorded four decades ago at a time when the country was deeply troubled by issues of race and war.  In exploring John Coltrane’s musical legacy from stages around the globe to the international airwaves, Turtle Island continues its own tradition of employing the string quartet form to shed new light on the timeless joy and beauty contained in the greatest music of the American jazz masters ~~The Turtle Island Quartet derived its name from creation mythology found in Native American folklore. Since its inception in 1985, the quartet has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings. Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet aesthetic with contemporary American musical styles, and by devising a performance practice that honors both, the state of the art has inevitably been redefined ~~ The Turtle Island Quartet includes David Balakrishnan (violin, baritone violin). The Turtle Island founder developed a revolutionary compositional style that has earned him two Grammy nominations (in the instrumental arrangement category for his string quartet adaptations of Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night In Tunisia” and the jazz ballad “You’ve Changed,” featuring clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera). Mark Summer (cello) is a founding member of Turtle Island and is widely regarded, thanks in part to his phenomenal percussion and pizzicato techniques, as one of the outstanding cellists of our time. Mads Tolling (violin) regularly tours and records with the acclaimed bassist Stanley Clarke and has performed with Joe Lovano, Al DiMeola, Lenny White and Gerry Brown. He studied under violinist Matt Glaser, and he graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2003. Jeremy Kittel, (viola) newest member of Turtle Island, is rapidly earning a reputation as one of the nation’s most creative young musicians. In 2003, he competed in the first ASTA Alternative Styles Competition, winning the Alfred Award for Best Improvisation, the Mark O’Connor Award of Merit, and IAJE Award for Best Jazz Performance. His most recent recording, “Jazz Violin,” won the 2006 Detroit Music Award for Outstanding Jazz Recording. A cherished Boulder tradition since 1948, Conference on World Affairs audiences have doubled in size over the last decade.  Last year, a combined audience of 92,000 students, faculty, local, national and international visitors attended 200 sessions at the five-day Conference ~~ One of the most popular CWA events is the Annual Jazz Concert. Both men were valuable mentors to John, allowing him to play with them as he progressed in his development. Several years later he met bassist David Friesen in New York City, and they formed a duo that recorded and toured prolifically for seven years, with performances in the United States,Canada, Europe and Australia. The duo continues to perform thirty years after their first meeting ~~ In 1983, John and David joined flutist Paul Horn and Paul’s son Robin Horn (on drums) for a historic tour of the Soviet Union. This was the first time in forty years that an American jazz group had been invited to play public performances in Russia. In 1993, 1995, and 1998 John returned to Russia, playing in numerous cities. His two sold-out performances in Kursk may have been the first appearances there by an American jazz musician ~~ John continues to tour, record and teach internationally. He has been Artist-In-Residence at schools in Germany, Indonesia, Argentina, and in the United States and Canada. A Night of Classic Jazz From The American SongbookSwallow Hill faculty violinist, Julia Hays’ first jazz experiences came here in Denver with Boulder guitarist Mark Klagstad in a trio with him and bassist Paul Warburton. “It was definitely a case of being thrown in at the deep end of the pool.” Perpetually changing genres, her playing has taken her from Carnegie Hall to Los Angeles’ Autry Museum of Western History and Art, from Chicago’s Olde Town School with Hollywood mainstay Ronny Cox, to Kerrville, Texas with songwriter John Davis ~~ From his first appearances, Denver bassist Paul Warburton has commanded the attention of jazz audiences. Since its inception in 1985, the quartet has been a singular force in the creation of bold, new trends in chamber music for strings. Turtle Island fuses the classical quartet aesthetic with contemporary American musical styles, and by devising a performance practice that honors both, the state of the art has inevitably been redefined ~~ The Turtle Island Quartet includes David Balakrishnan (violin, baritone violin). The Turtle Island founder developed a revolutionary compositional style that has earned him two Grammy nominations (in the instrumental arrangement category for his string quartet adaptations of Dizzy Gillespie’s “A Night In Tunisia” and the jazz ballad “You’ve Changed,” featuring clarinetist Paquito D’Rivera). Mark Summer (cello) is a founding member of Turtle Island and is widely regarded, thanks in part to his phenomenal percussion and pizzicato techniques, as one of the outstanding cellists of our time. Mads Tolling (violin) regularly tours and records with the acclaimed bassist Stanley Clarke and has performed with Joe Lovano, Al DiMeola, Lenny White and Gerry Brown. He studied under violinist Matt Glaser, and he graduated summa cum laude from Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2003. Jeremy Kittel, (viola) newest member of Turtle Island, is rapidly earning a reputation as one of the nation’s most creative young musicians. In 2003, he competed in the first ASTA Alternative Styles Competition, winning the Alfred Award for Best Improvisation, the Mark O’Connor Award of Merit, and IAJE Award for Best Jazz Performance. His most recent CD, ¡BIEN BIEN! has earned international acclaim including 4.5 stars in DownBeat Magazine, and he’s earned a place on the DownBeat Critic’s Poll both as a producer and trombonist. With a formidable career that has seen him on the stage and in the studio with countless luminaries of contemporary music from all genres (Count Basie, Ray Charles, Joe Henderson, Celine Dion, Carlos Santana, Lionel Hampton, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Sonny Rollins, Pearl Bailey, Aretha Franklin, Tito Puente, Lena Horne, Pete Escovedo, Stevie Wonder, John Lee Hooker, Earl “Fatha” Hines and cellist Jean Jeanrenaud of the Kronos Quartet to name a few), Wallace’s light is burning bright with a growing catalog of critically acclaimed releases on his Patois label. He is known for his innovative use of traditional forms and instruments in combination with contemporary music, and has earned much respect and recognition as an educator, composer, and record and event producer. He has performed, recorded and studied with acknowledged masters of the Afro-Latin and Jazz idioms such as Cachao, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente, Bebo Valdés, Lazaro Ros, Armando Peraza, Eddie Palmieri, Patato Valdés, Francisco Aguabella, Orestes Vilató, Rene López, Max Roach, Batacumbele, Steve Turre, John Faddis, Nestor Torres and Chocolate Armenteros. This experience has provided a solid foundation for Mr. Santos’ current ground- breaking work in bringing together styles, rhythms, concepts and artists from different generations. Born in San Francisco, California, November 1, l955, he was raised in the Puerto Rican and Cape Verdean traditions of his family, surrounded by music. His studies of Afro-Latin music have included several trips to New York, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil and Colombia ~~ Michael Spiro is an internationally recognized percussionist, recording artist, and educator, known specifically for his work in the Latin music field. He has performed on thousands of records, co-produced and played on several instructional videos for Warner Bros. Publications (including Talking Drums, Changuito, Giovanni Hidalgo, and Ignacio Berroa), and produced seminal recordings in the Latin music genre, including Orquesta Batachanga, Grupo BataKetu, Mark Levine and the Latin Tinge, and Grupo Ilu-Aña ~~ David Belove is a Kansas City native who relocated to San Francisco in 1973 and soon became the Bay Area’s most prominent Latin and Brazilian bassist.  He has recorded, performed or toured with Pete and Sheila Escovedo, Tito Puente, John Santos and the Machete Ensemble, Rebeca Mauleón, Rolando Morales, Homenagem Brasiliera, Wayne Wallace, The Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and many more.  Belove has also worked with jazz artists including Joe Henderson, Blue Mitchell, Eddie Harris, Max Roach, Dizzy Gillespie, Larry Coryell, Louis Bellson, Mark Murphy and Pat Metheny.  Belove teaches at the JazzSchool in Berkeley, CA, at Jazz Camp West, the Jazz In the Middle program for SF Jazz, and in 2004 he became an adjunct faculty member at Mills College.
