In the world of jazz, women have long been marginalized as singers or piano players. Little has ever been documented about the enormously talented female trumpet players, saxophonist and drummers who struggled for recognition but were cut off from any meaningful employment by men who didn’t want women on their bandstands. This film traces the history of the all-girl bands and the struggles of the handful who broke through the male bastions, and brings us into the present day, where brilliantly gifted young women are going toe-to-toe with the finest jazz musicians of their day.

PostHeaderIcon ~~ SAT MAY 18TH ~~ THE CSO Featurin’ Conductor/Pianist Andrew Litton Performin’ George Gershwin’zz, “Rhapsody In Blue” ~~

Andrew Litton, conductor/ piano

Due to the budget cutbacks from the government sequestration, the Washington D. C. based U.S. Army Chorus will not be able to appear with the Colorado Symphony. The U.S. Army Chorus program will be replaced with an evening of music by George Gershwin. Artistic Advisor Andrew Litton will conduct in a previously unscheduled appearance. The centerpiece of the program, Rhapsody in Blue, features Mr. Litton on piano. Current ticket holders to the U.S. Army Chorus concert may use their tickets for the Gershwin concert without any further action. If you are unable to attend the Gershwin program or have any further questions, please contact the Colorado Symphony Box Office.

George Gershwin’s music is instantly recognizable and evocative of America in the early 20th century. Appearing in everything from the stage to popular culture, his music is the perfect tribute to the rich tapestry of this nation. In addition to Rhapsody in Blue, the program includes the Overture to Crazy for You, and Who Cares? a ballet featuring the Gershwin songbook with songs that include Strike Up The Band, The Man I Love, Somebody Loves Me, I Got Rhythm, and many more. Come and be swept up in the music that has made Gershwin an icon.
